Barn owl
The owl in my shed is common as muck and i for one do not care what make it is. It sits up on the rafter all day shitting on my tractor. If I had my way i'd wipe every owl off the face of the earth.
barn and tawny.
barn owl
i think the most common owl in britain is either the barn owl, or the tweet. i think it's the barn owl. or maybe....the tawny. yeah, the tawny. ask j.k.rowling, author of harry potter. she writes about owls, she should know alot about it.
Tawny owl

Strix aluco

Tawny owls are the most common and widespread owl in Europe. They are also the owl that emits the characteristic 'twit-twoo' call, although it is actually a duet between the male and the female.

Statistics

Tawny owls are the biggest common owl in the UK, with a body length of 38cm and a wingspan of 95-105cm. The males weigh an average of 400g and the females weigh 590g.

Physical Description

The plumage is chestnut brown, heavily mottled with grey, brown and black streaks. The face is round with deep set black eyes.

Distribution

Tawny owls range across Europe, from Britain to Scandinavia, as well as North Africa and North and West Asia.

Habitat

Their preferred habitat is woodland, gardens, parks and urban areas.

Behaviour

Tawny owls are territorial and use the same range throughout their lives. They hunt small birds, mammals, frogs and insects by rapidly swooping down onto the prey.

Males and females bond for life. The female lays 2-4 eggs in March or early April, in a hole in a tree or an old crows nest. The male feeds the brood for about 21 days and then both parents feed the chicks. After 32-37 days, the chicks leave the nest.

Conservation status

Tawny owls are not considered to be threatened, although they were heavily persecuted by gamekeepers up until the early part of this century. The increasing spread of this species into towns and cities has also stood it in good stead.

Tawny owls are the commonest owl in the UK, with about 20,000 pairs, but there have been some fairly worrying declines in recent years.

Voice

This is the owl that hoots at night. The normal call is a duet: Twit is the male and Twoo is the female. They have a variety of other calls, which the males and females use to communicate with each other.
